Post Mortem of Revenue Generated by a iOS Game

Word-Search3 Some developer often think how much money can a moderate popular game or app generate? Some often think whether they should develop apps for mobile platform or not. Normally there are not much average revenue statistics  in online. I have several failed apps those don’t generate noticeable money. But this time I want to disclose about the money I earned by one of our moderate popular iOS game. I hope it will help new developer to understand roughly how much money they can generate by developing mobile apps or games.

So on 18th September, 2013 I released  Word Search Multiplayer Multilingual  game for iOS platform. In initial version there was no multiplayer feature and no multilingual feature. To build the game, I hired a freelancer who develop the puzzle generated algorithm and game board. It roughly costs me around USD 1200.

Since then every modification, plan is developed by me. As I love coding myself, from the skeleton of the project, I build everything. Later I introduced multiplayer game play feature, vocabulary improving feature, multilingual feature, online newspaper word playing feature. I also released another version for Android but that doesn’t able to generate much money, so in my rest of article I will only discuss about the iOS version.

Well, lets see the timeline of this project till now:

-> Initial Release: 9/18/2013
-> Today: 31/12/2015

Roughly 27 months and still running the app in the store.

For marketing purpose, I spent roughly: USD 14,000 (including press release + other ad channel)

Marketing

I earned roughly: USD 29,000 USD

Revenue

So in this 27 months, my total cost excluding my own time: USD 15200, so my profit: USD 13800, On average monthly: USD 500.

This game downloaded over 400K times from Apple Store, Over 217K players record their scores in Apple Game Center leaderboard. Still the game generate money on average USD 400 monthly.

Finally what I want to say that, there are 1000+ Word Search games in app store, that doesn’t mean every word search is earning good money. Though there are high competition that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t develop something similar but in some way unique. If you have vision, some uniqueness, either fun or useful your app can generate good money. Thank you for reading this article. I wish you all the best. Happy New Year 2016

    Hi Mahmud,
    I just discovered your blog and it is amazing!

    I am gonna launch my app soon, do you have any suggestion to advertise it?
    I see you spent USD 14,000 for your app: how did you spend it? Which channel did work best? What’s the best strategy: spend a lot of money at once or use it gradually along time?

    So many question:) Did you write a blog post about this argument?

    Thanks a keep the great work,
    Fede

      Hi, I will try to write another post. Right now, what I advise you, what I do, post launch I paid a good amount in advertise channel like facebook/google, Press Release, blog post etc. It helps to download the app a big number suddenly to get better rank. Then over time I reduce the price. For example, suppose you spent 1000 USD in first 2 days for advertise, press release etc. Then after 2 days, you spend 100 USD per day. If your revenue comes after 1 month arround 100 USD, then you reduce the cost like 80 USD. So you have to calculate manually about the costing/profit. But honestly speaking, this doesn’t make hit every apps. Unless user like your app after few months may be your costing cross your profit. Good Luck
